City College Journalism Department Chair Juan Gonzales is depicted in a mural on the exterior wall of Horace Mann Middle School. Gonzales can be found second from the left, top row. The yet-to-be completed mural, done in partnership with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, honors community heroes.

Gonzales, founding editor of El Tecolote, was chosen by former Horace Mann student Jose Perez.

Perez, who has since returned to Mexico, had an interest in working at El Tecolote,Horace Mann teacher Gail Eigl said.

“He also liked that Juan was bilingual,” she said.

The people in the mural were picked by students, who then traced the faces onto the wall. Students painted the mural with help from by teachers and volunteers.

“We hope to have the mural done by the end of the school year. We just have to add names and finish the borders,” Eigl said.
