On March 17th, 2015 City College Police Officer James H. Byrne Jr. passed away at the age of 79. Officer Byrnes served with the City of San Francisco for seven years. He had a long career in law enforcement, working for the Oakland Police Department for 34 years and the U.S. Marshall Service for 12 years.

He began his professional life with the U.S. Marine Corps where he served for three years. Besides his distinguished career in law enforcement, James Byrnes was a fourth degree black belt in Karate and was involved in the sport for over 25 years. He was inducted into the Karate Hall of Fame and acted as an international judge and referee. Colleagues remember Jim as a highly disciplined, conscientious, and reliable officer, as well as a good friend and family man.

James will be deeply missed by his wife, Marilyn Maylone Byrne, his son, Garrett M. Byrne, and his daughter, Natalie P. Byrne. His son, Kevin T. Byrne, was previously deceased.

Hisfuneral services were held on Sat. March 28 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in San Ramon, CA.
