Silver picnic tables new to campus

The office of Facilities Management at City College has installed silver picnic tables at several locations around the Ocean campus, including along the West side of the Visual Arts building.

Students and faculty members are no longer limited to sitting in the cafeteria near Smith Hall or the Lunch Box to enjoy their meals. “There are other tables put out on the plaza between Cloud Hall and Science Hall,” said Associate Vice Chancellor of Facilities Planning/Management James Blomquist. “And there are tables on the terrace of the Student Union as well.”

“These tables are designed to accommodate four people and also disabled people, so they can sit with their friends,” said Blomquist.

Each table can seat four people plus one wheelchair-user, due to the seating arrangement of the tables.

30-year-old sociology major David Mooney was impressed by the addition of the tables to the campus, but felt that some protection from the weather could be an improvement to the tables.

“I am all for the tables, though — anything to let students relax and enjoy the fresh air,” said Mooney.

The tables are currently being added for trial purposes, said Blomquist. If they prove to be popular with students, Facilities Management will try to expand and improve the tables, which could mean the adding amenities such as umbrellas.

“We would be very interested in hearing what people have to say about the new tables,” said Blomquist.
