On a  sunny, crisp afternoon, City College breezed by the Santa Rosa Bearcubs to win their 17th conference title in the last 20 years in Santa Rosa on Nov. 14.

The Ram offense could not be stopped all day long as they rolled up 502 yards of total offense, held possession for more than thirty-five minutes in winning 47-27 and moved their record to 9-1.

Quarterback Darius Bell passed for 346 yards and three touchdowns. Receiver Anthony Amos caught 15 passes for 225 yards with a touchdown to lead the onslaught.

“We pretty much ran the same play and it kept working,” Amos said. “I never been 9-1 before, but we’ve been working hard since last year. Feels good.”

The Rams took control right from the beginning of the game, as Santa Rosa fumbled the opening kickoff to give City College great field position. Five plays later Bell found receiver Anthony Amos for a five-yard touchdown toss for the games first score.

Fullback Brian Hutton scored the next touchdown, set up by a 75-yard reception by Amos, and put the Rams up 14-0 early in the first quarter.
The only drama in the game came right happened before halftime when the Rams were up 31-7 and the Bearcubs scored on a short touchdown pass from quarterback Grayson Galloway.

The Rams fumbled away the kickoff and with five seconds left in the first half, Santa Rosa threw a hail mary and scored to make the score 31-21 at halftime.

During the second half, City College quickly regained control and erased any momentum Santa Rosa had going in at halftime. With a little over eight minutes left in the third quarter, cornerback Nigel Malone intercepted a Galloway pass and raced 45-yards for a touchdown to put the Rams comfortably ahead 40-21.

Due to losing to College of San Mateo Oct. 31, the Rams lost the tiebreaker for the Northern California playoffs. However, They will still participate in the San Francisco Community College Hawaiian Punch Bowl Dec. 5 against American River College. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m.

“We’re really happy to be conference champions. We’re 9-1, a top-five team in the state of California, and if we keep working hard we’ll finish as one of the top two teams,” said head coach George Rush. “I’m very proud of our guys and I’ll throw our record up against anybody.”
