The in-person rally, followed by a virtual press-conference attended by more than 400 people, featured lively call-and-response chants and testimonials from faculty, staff and students who addressed the importance of retaining class offerings for the most underserved students in the Bay Area.
Supporters of a Native American activist who has spent more than 40 years behind bars for a crime he says he didn’t commit have ramped up their push for clemency after he recently tested positive for COVID-19.
Since the death of George Floyd, many including students have taken to the streets to protest the use of excessive force by police in America. Bay Area students have a long history of protest, notably the Third World Liberation Strikes of 1968, which fought for more inclusion and diversity on the campuses of San Francisco State and UC Berkeley.
City College faculty, students, and student groups organized a protest at San Francisco’s Fort Mason Center on June 22. Protesters expressed their anger regarding the recent decision to forgo the lease for the college’s Fort Mason campus, the removal of ESL and OLAD programs, and the disinvestment in its Black students.
City College students joined many other groups at a large anti-war protest in Downtown San Francisco.
