December 10 State Your Fashion

By Al Lin

Madeline McKenna
Eclectic fashionista

When asked about her style, Madeline McKenna laughs and dodges the question. That’s because the San Diego native’s fashion is a mixture of styles and cannot be described as one or the other.

Madeline’s outfit is complete with black flats, a black vintage wool jacket, which was a gift and skinny jeans, which are from H&M. Other then H&M, Madeline said she likes to shop at boutiques like Held Over on Haight Street.

Madeline admits she went through punk rocker phase in high school, which is evident by her side swept bangs that were inspired JenniferHermma of the now-disbanded Royal Trux.

But beyond the shaggy bangs and punk bands, Madeline also has a soft spot for dead socialites like Sharon Tate , who was a victim of the Manson family in 1969 and is the inspiration for her collection of 60s dresses.

Chiyo Komori, 31
Young, fresh and Japanese

If you are trying to copy City College student Chiyo Komori’s style, tough luck; you’ll have to go all the way to Nagoya, Japan.

“I brought and bought everything from Japan,” said the 31-year-old fashion merchandising student.

Komori says that she usually doesn’t plan what she is going to wear in advance, but follows her impulses every morning.

“It is just a feeling I have, and everyday I have a different style, ” Komori said.

While in Japan, Komori didn’t have to shop around for her clothes a lot. She frequented only one shop, where her sister worked.

“They imported clothes from all different countries that carried different styles for young people,” said Komori.

Komori was able to find everything from her trendy knee high, fur lined, brown lace up boots, to her baby girl pink wooden, “love you forever” earrings at her sisters store. Her outfit cost, which also incuded her wooly white hat and accompanying accessories only cost her about a hundred dollars.

Komori has only been in the US one year as an international student, but she hopes to own and run her very own shop in San Francisco, one that carries Japans fashionable styles.

“Eventually I hope to have my own clothing shop, even though it is hard,” said Komori.

Saeko Imai, 19
Classy with a bit of fun

“I used to dress in lots of colors like a pride banner, but I’ve changed since I moved here,” said Saeko Imai, who arrived here from Japan three months ago. She has also lived in London and New York and now resides in the Inner Sunset.

Imai felt an instant attachment to San Francisco. “I’m not sure why, but I do like the diversity of the city.

“The new environment changed how I perceive myself, feeling self-conscious in a new place,” said Imai.

Her favorite places to shop are Urban Outfitters and second hand stores on Haight Street. Some pieces of her ensembles — from her hat to her to her skirt — are from stores like H&M, Goodwill, and Buffalo Exchange.

The clothing she chooses to wear depends on her mood and the weather. “I like simple clothing with a little color, something a little off tone, something that will break the classy style.”

Although Imai enjoys studying theater she says still has her eyes open to everything.

“I’ll see how far life will take me.

State Your Fashion: Lola Chavez

By Jennifer Nichols

Lola Chavez

Some City College student their best to keep up with the latest styles. They take their fashion cues from magazines they read or videos they watch. This is not the case for Lola Chavez.

Having just returned a month ago from living in Italy, Chavez is currently “couch surfing” and makes every effort to save money.

Chavez, who was born in Chile, said nothing really influences her style.

“Sometimes I find clothes on the street or friends give them to me,” said Chavez. “I can’t remember the last thing I bought, and I try not to go out and buy materialistic items.”

She also does all of her own piercing and some of her tattooing. She buys most of her jewelry for piercing from head shops in the Haight. “They have good jewelry and it costs eight dollars at a head shop for something that would be thirty dollars at a jewelry shop.”

By Clive Walker

Greg Purdue, 22

Metal Head

Lots of people like to let their favorite genre of music influence what they wear and how they present themselves to the world.

City College student Greg Purdue is one of them. With his classic blue jeans, Chucks, full-sleeve tattoo, and Morbid Angel T-shirt, he walks around Ocean campus with an attitude and demeanor that only a hard rocker could pull off.

“I listen to metal from every era and some hardcore,” Purdue said. He prefers to wear t-shirts with his favorite band names on them. “I like to support the bands I listen to and dress as simply as possible.”

Purdue likes to purchase most of his T-shirts at concerts. If a band he likes doesn’t play in the U.S., he buys their shirt online.

His tattoos are more than just a fashion statement. “They help define who I am by expressing my thoughts and beliefs,” Purdue said.

Purdue is a food runner at a restaurant by night while finishing his general education requirements here at City College.

When asked which band he would see if he could see any band in history, he replied, “Led Zeppelin because, well, they’re Led Zeppelin.”

Nicole Hardwick, 19

Hip Chic
Life in San Francisco can be expensive. Actually, the cost of living can be outrageous for students anywhere in the world.

Nicole Hardwick, a thrift shop junkie, is influenced be the endless possibilties of vintage clothes. Nicole personalizes her own style.

“I listen to Hip-Hop, House, R&B and especially Lauryn Hill, but music doesn’t really influence my style.”

Her laid back, collected appearance, however, could very well be influenced by those genres, maybe even a tribute to Ms. Hill.

“I go to stores like Buffalo Exchange, Crossroads, and thrift shops, mainly in the Haight.”

Nicole, who is studying Sociology and Salesmanship here at City College. pays the bills by tending bar at a club.

When asked what she would wear if money was no object,  she said, “I would go big, probably Versace, Gucci. I’ve wanted to shop at Bloomingdales, it’s just so expensive, and I love Betsey Johnson.”
