The African American Studies Department has been around for 50 years, yet black and brown students continue to struggle to level the educational playing field at City College.
City College faculty, students, and student groups organized a protest at San Francisco’s Fort Mason Center on June 22. Protesters expressed their anger regarding the recent decision to forgo the lease for the college’s Fort Mason campus, the removal of ESL and OLAD programs, and the disinvestment in its Black students.
City College’s African American Studies Department [AFAM] celebrates being rooted at the college for 50 years. However, behind the celebration lies plights for AFAM. Will AFAM see another tomorrow, or will the department be consolidated like its sister departments in neighboring colleges?
