Demeaned for HARTS card in cafeteria

Posted by The Guardsman Online Administrator On May - 4 - 2011

Editor,

During the course of my first semester at CCSF, I enrolled in the HARTS program and received a food subsidy card. This card helped me to afford to feed myself, maintain my housing, maintain good grades and continue school.

Initially the program sounds well intentioned, but as a student using the card, I was  harassed by a CCSF cashier several times and finally demeaned in front of Smith Hall students and staff for having the card.

Based on the actions of this employee, I experienced both harassment and discrimination. Are CCSF staff not being trained regarding sensitivity issues?
