With the number of fraudulent student accounts having more than doubled this semester, faculty members are predicting matters will only get worse.
The California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office has taken measures to reduce fraud, such as upgrading its admission portal and improving technology to more quickly identify cases of fraud. The system now requires two-factor authentication and shares suspected fraudulent applications between colleges to prevent bot enrollment.
A surge of suspicious applications has flooded the California Community College system, with up to 65,000 fraudulent applications statewide from 77 countries, according to a Board of Trustees presentation at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton.
Cases of federal financial aid fraud occur all over the United States, but recently there has been a case involving City College and two other Bay Area schools.
