Over 3,000 medical appointments and 1,458 mental health sessions have been scheduled in semesters. Despite this, more than 18,000 enrolled students would currently be eligible to benefit from the health services.
On February 25th, City College students engage in a transformative breathwork practice. Sponsored by the Office of Student Equity and led by Qilig’s healers and cultural workers, the event integrated sound therapy with a unique Sound Bath meditation.
City College provides a number of resources to support students amidst the mental health crisis sweeping campuses across the country.
The month of May is Mental Health Awareness Month and Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The Filipino Student Association at City College organized a panel discussion on May 5 at the Student Health Center to commemorate this. City College is a community college serving a diverse student population, should be responsible for providing spaces like this and resources and support for students from all backgrounds. This includes mental health resources that are culturally sensitive and appropriate for the needs of Filipino/a/x and BIPOC students.
City College Student Health Services prepare its faculty and staff on ways to support students in their mental health and prevent suicide amid the nationwide spike in suicide rates. Sandy Vaughn, a mental health counselor in the Health Center, presented examples of warning signs if someone may want to end one’s life and provided contact information on where to seek help.
City College’s Mental Health Services offers counseling and support, with in-person and virtual support groups available. All credit-taking students are eligible for services at no additional cost beyond the student health fee.
The Student Health Center is open and operating in a hybrid mode to deliver a multitude of both physical and mental health services for City College students.
There is plenty of cause for stress among City College students, many of whom are likely sharing the increased anxiety, depression, and substance abuse that 40% of American adults are reporting, according to a CDC survey conducted over the summer.
The state’s shelter-in-place order has brought about discussions of City College students’ access to adequate mental-health care and the complexities of race and class which also factor into access to these needs.
