“Ghost Students” Haunt California Community Colleges as Fraudulent Applicants Steal Financial Aid and Class Spots

The California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office has taken measures to reduce fraud, such as upgrading its admission portal and improving technology to more quickly identify cases of fraud. The system now requires two-factor authentication and shares suspected fraudulent applications between colleges to prevent bot enrollment.

City College Eases COVID-19 Restrictions, Lifts Mask Mandate, Effective Feb. 6, and Proof of Vaccination Requirement

The City College Board of Trustees has approved the removal of the mask mandate on campus, effective Feb. 6, and the removal of the proof of vaccination mandate for the upcoming summer 2023 registration cycle. The policy of requiring proof of vaccination or an allowable exemption for in-person classes is still in place for spring 2023. The college will still strongly recommend wearing masks.

The Guardsman and Etc. Magazine Win Big at San Francisco Press Club’s 45th Annual Greater Bay Journalism Awards

The San Francisco Press Club held its 45th Annual Greater Bay Journalism Awards on December 8th, honoring both professional and student journalists. The Guardsman was named Best College Newspaper while the college magazine, Etc. Magazine, won Best College Magazine and several other awards in the College Media category. The event was well attended with over 400 journalism awards presented and was the first public event since the pandemic.

Newly-elected Trustees Sworn in at City College; Alan Wong Elected Board President During Special Meeting

With roots in San Francisco, Anita Martinez, Vick Chung and Susan Solomon ran on a labor-backed slate in November and unseated three long-time incumbents. Now, the new trustees promise to listen to the concerns of students, faculty and the public. Alan Wong was also elected board president during a special meeting on Jan. 19, and Anita Martinez was elected vice-president.

“Students who might have been disadvantaged by a placement test and ended up with a very low placement as a result, were able to enroll in transfer-level math classes and succeed when supported adequately. It was truly revolutionary.”

“If I had been placed (directly) in precalculus I would have given up and never developed the mental skills, the math maturity, the “muscle memories,” and never discovered the beauty of math.”

“So as a result, starting in the fall of 2022 we are no longer offering pre-transfer level English and math classes.”
