Women’s soccer: Rams defeat Skyline 3-1; onto 2nd round of Norcal Regionals
Having the number two seed and home field advantage in the 2011 Women’s Soccer Norcal Regional playoffs, the Rams were already off on the right foot before their match between the 15th seeded Skyline Trojans even started.
The ball also seemed to bounce City College’s way during the game, as they were able to take advantage of an own goal by Skyline in the Rams 3-1 win at City College’s soccer field on Nov. 19.
The first round match-up between the two teams featured the top two goal scorers in the conference with Skyline freshman Katie Jaques first at 22 goals, and the Rams sophomore forward Tera Piserchio with 18 goals coming in.
The game started with the Trojans deflecting the ball into their own goal, handing City College it’s first lead of the game early in the 8th minute. Then Jaques was able to maneuver her way into the box as her shot went into the bottom left corner of the net tying the game at 1-1.
The Rams came out of halftime aggressive as sophomore midfielder Nichole Caiocca watched her shot hit off the crossbar and deflect directly at sophomore defender Gail Basset for an easy shot, giving her team the lead for good.
“Right when it was kicked I knew the keeper was pretty aggressive and she was going to come out,” Basset said. “I thought it was going to rebound off of her but fortunately it went over her, went off the post, and I was right there ready and shot it in.”
The Rams came into the game first in NorCal in goals allowed and head coach Gabriel Saucedo was able to get his defense to wake up in the second half.
“In the playoffs we always talking about getting a result, so I’m really happy with the victory,” head coach Gabriel Saucedo said. “I thought in the first half we came out on our heels and gave them a lot of space to play and we talked about it at halftime. The team made awesome adjustments in the second half and I’m happy with the second half performance.”
Piserchio also added a goal in the 69th minute giving her team a comfortable two goal cushion the rest of the way.
The Rams move on to the second round to face 10th seeded Foothill College, who defeated 7th seed Cabrillo 1-0 to advance. The game is at 11 a.m. on Nov. 22 at City College soccer field.
